Individuals’ Right for Vaccination

Recently, the decisions to stop Moderna Covid vaccination for those who were younger than 30 by Sweden, Denmark, and Finland surprised the world. All three countries based their decision on an unpublished study with Sweden's Public Health Agency saying that it signals "an increased risk of side effects such as inflammation of the heart muscle or the pericardium" -- the double-walled sac containing the heart and the roots of the main vessels. It added: "The risk of being affected is very small."

Anders Tegnell, Sweden's chief epidemiologist, also said they "follow the situation closely and act quickly to ensure that vaccinations against COVID-19 are always as safe as possible and at the same time provide effective protection" against the disease.

However, many other countries consider their decision as hasty, grounded on weak data. They say that Moderna's vaccine was given the green light for use in anyone 18 and over across the 27-nation European Union in January 2021, which proves the safety of the vaccination. In July 2021, the European Medicines Agency even recommended authorizing Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 12 to 17, the first time that shot was cleared for anyone under 18. Canada also recently approved its use for those as young as 12.

Hundreds of millions of Moderna doses already have been administered to adults. In a study of more than 3,700 children aged 12 to 17, the vaccine triggered the same signs of immune protection, and no COVID-19 diagnoses arose in the vaccinated group compared with four cases among those given dummy shots.

U.S. and European regulators cautioned, however, that both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines appear linked to a rare reaction in teenagers and young adults -- chest pain and heart inflammation.

It is clearly up to the individual government what decision it will make regarding the kind or timing of vaccination. However, I believe that people, especially teenagers, have a right to listen to various reports and opinions on the vaccination plan and they should be allowed to choose whether they will get vaccinated or not. In conclusion, I believe that individuals under the age of 30 and are not eligible for vaccination should be able to choose for themselves after being educated about the side effects that the vaccine can cause.

최근 스웨덴, 덴마크, 핀란드 정부는 30세 미만에게 모더나 백신 접종을 일시 중지한다는 발표를 했고, 이 결정은 세계를 놀라게 했습니다. 이 결정을 한 국가들은 심장/심혈관 질환을 읽으킬 수 있는 위험을 보고한 스웨덴공공보건청의 연구를 근거로 이런 결정을 했다고 밝혔습니다.

하지만, 많은 다른 나라들에서는 이 세 국가의 결정을 너무 성급한 결정이고 확실하지 않은 데이터를 근거로 한 잘못된 결정이라고 말하고 있습니다. 이미 EU 27국에서 2021년 1월에 모더나의 안정성을 인정했고, EU의학당국은 12-17세 청소년에게 모더나 백신접종을 지난 7월에 결정했습니다. 캐나다 역시 12세 청소년에게까지도 모더나 백신 접종을 허용하고 있습니다.

물론 미국과 EU 당국은 모더나나 화이저 백신이 드물긴 하지만 청소년들에게 가슴 통증/ 심근염을 일으킬 수 있음을 경고하고는 있습니다.

어떤 종류의 백신을 언제 국민들에게 맞게 할 지는 철저히 각 정부의 결정에 달린 것입니다. 하지만 모든 사람들, 특히 십대 청소년들은 , 먼저 각 백신의 효능과 문제점에 대해 자세히 알 권리가 있다고 생각합니다. 이 정보를 들은 후 어떤 백신을 언제 맞을지 결정할 수 있는 권리를 청소년들에게 주어야 한다고 믿습니다.
